What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is a safe environment where children can explore their feelings, thoughts, experiences and behaviours through play. Play therapists use role play, story-telling, toys, and games to help children explore and express themselves creatively, in their own way, and at their own pace. Play therapy helps children build resilience, feel safe, secure and confident.
Play therapy is:
- Client-centred
- Permissive
- Non-judgmental
- Balanced between non-directive and directive approaches
- Accepting of the client
- Safe and confidential with simple, clear boundaries
Some of the potential benefits of play therapy include:
- Alleviation of anxiety
- Improved resilience
- Development of empathy and respect
- Increased self-esteem
- Greater confidence
- Improved concentration
- Enhanced communication
- Development of social skills
Who are PTUK?
Play Therapy UK (PTUK) leads the way when setting the standards to ensure high quality of care when play therapy, therapeutic play skills and creative arts therapies are used with children.
I have gone through rigorous training with APAC (affiliated to Leeds Beckett University) who act as training providers for PTUK.
